Dear Chaminade Hockey Family, Friends and Alumni,

After another very successful season on and off the ice, I wanted to bring everyone up to date on the status of the Chaminade Hockey Program as well as to make you aware of recent changes that have taken place as we approach the summer and the 2014-15 season.  Before outlining the recent changes, I would like to acknowledge some fantastic individuals who have made a positive impact on our program through their countless hours of work and effort.

First, on behalf of the Board and the entire organization, I would like to thank Nathan Hirsch for his time spent as the head coach of the Varsity Hockey Club over the last two seasons.  Nathan and his staff compiled the second best league record over the past two seasons and a Frozen Four appearance this past season.  Coach Hirsch has decided to step back from coaching, for the time being, and focus his attention on his family and career.  We hope Coach Hirsch will continue to help out when possible, but certainly understand the time commitments that go along with being the head coach.  If you see him around the rink, please shake his hand and thank him for the time he spent with your son and our organization.  We wish Nathan all the best and hope to keep him within the organization.

With that being said, I would like to announce that Kiley Hill has agreed to accept the Head Coaching position and become the seventh head coach in the history of the Chaminade College Prep Hockey Program.  Most recently, Kiley was an assistant coach on the Varsity staff last season with Coach Hirsch, Coach Peterson and Coach Van Gels.  Kiley is originally from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and moved to St. Louis in 1999. Kiley was a 6th round selection in the 1993 NHL Draft to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kiley played his hockey at the AAA level which evolved into a 4 year career in the Ontario Hockey League where he was a member of Memorial Cup Champion Soo Greyhounds. After playing out his eligibility, Kiley moved on to the Laurentian University Voyageurs of the CIAU where he was an All-Canadian and graduated with a BA in Economics. Kiley played the better part of his 5 year professional career in the ECHL, UHL, AHL and IHL and attended the Hartford Whalers and St. Louis Blues training camps. After injuries forced Kiley to retire from his playing days, he made his home in St. Louis and got involved with youth hockey. Kiley has been helped youth hockey players in St. Louis learn the fundamentals of the game of hockey as well as helping with their personal development away from the rink. Kiley earned his MBA from Webster University which has helped him in his career within the Commercial Finance and Banking industry. Kiley resides with his wife Beth and daughter Fiona in Chesterfield.  Please reach out to Kiley to congratulate him on his new position and welcome him into the Chaminade Hockey Family!  Stay tuned for more announcements as the Varsity coaching staff is finalized.

Next, fellow Alumni and Junior Varsity Head Coach, Chris Ambrose has decided to step down from the JV ranks and assume the duties of coaching a Bantam Central States team in the Chesterfield Hockey organization.  Chris will be a great ambassador for the Chaminade Hockey program within the Chesterfield ranks and continue to be a part of Chaminade Hockey into the future.  With this change, Coach Marc Torrente will be moving on from helping with the JV as well.  On behalf of the Board and the entire program, I would like to thank both of those proud alumni and wish them all the best.

Taking over the reigns as the new Junior Varsity Head Coach will be Darrell Kern.  Darrell (Father of Dan ’14) is a former player himself and has coached youth hockey in St. Louis for more than 25+ years.  His passion and commitment to Chaminade Hockey is evident as he has been helping out in various roles within the organization for the last four years.  Assisting Coach Darrell Kern will be Coaches Mark Kern (no relation) and Harris Schiff.  We are glad to have Darrell and his staff on board.

Last, we can never thank Mark Finke enough for all the time, energy, money, time, etc. he has invested into the Chaminade Hockey Program.  Mark and I have changed positions as I have been elected President of the Board while Mark will now be the Vice President of the Board moving forward.  I am excited to assume these duties and can’t wait to see what the future holds.  Should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to me.

I would like to remind everyone of the Second Annual Chaminade Hockey Golf Tournament taking place at Gateway National Golf Club on July 26, 2014.  Information about the tournament can be found at www.chaminadehockey.com  We hope you can join us for a fun day of golf, food, libations, meeting new people and catching up with old friends.

Best,

Matt Hrubes ‘91
